This paper examines how people evaluate the pork barrel activities of the incumbent LDP representatives. More specifically, it investigates whether LDP politicians' affiliations with the specific subcommittees of the Policy Affairs Research Council (PARC) within the LDP have any impact on people's evaluation of candidates during an election campaign. Using the 1983 General Election Study (JES) in conjunction with the data of the LDP politicians' activities, I show that LDP politicians' pork barrel activities at the PARC affect people's evaluation. Furthermore, the impact of those activities is not uniform across the population. The pork barrel activities engaged in by specific politicians have a strong impact on those who know those politicians very well while the activities have virtually no impact on those who merely recognize the politicians. I argue that this link between politicians' activities and people's evaluation is a crucial link that makes government responsive to people's needs.
