8 groups of <I>S</I>s tried to push a plate coupled to a weight (500 or 1, 000gm) to an indicated distance (5 or 25cm) at a pace determined by the speed of a belt (37.2 or 7.74cm/sec) operated through an adjustable-speed motor. After 10 such trials, each <I>S</I> was to push the plate for 10 more trials, trying to keep pace with the other speed of the belt than previously used, while all other conditions were kept the same. It was found that response speed is a powerful variable in determining response latency. Implications of this finding were then discussed.
