The phenomenon of disappearnace of a fleck in the presence of other visual objects was investigated. A stimulus pattern (a fleck and two rectangles) similar to that showed by Metzger (1936) were used. The threshold for the fleck was measured with varying luminance ratio of the fleck to its background. There was found an optimal width of the rectangles for disappearance of the fleck in each experimental condition. The optimal width varied across the various conditions in the separation between the two rectangles and in the hight of the rectangles. The maximum effect of the rectangles upon the fleck occured when the luminance ratio to their background was approximately 1:5. In the presence of the rectangles, the threshold was generally higher than the control level (the one measured without the rectangles), but in some conditions it was lower than the control level.
