Using four pictures from Murray's TAT series, this pilot study aimed to investigate the commonly held assumption that this method is reasonably suitable for measuring achievement motivation. Data were obtained from a group of 180 British secondary school pupils, aged 14-16 years. The two dimensions, hope of success and fear of failure, were treated separately. Positive and consistent inter-scorer and inter-story agreements were noted. This would seem to indicate that the reliability of the thematic apperception material was reasonably satisfactory. Non-significant correlations between intelligence test scores and the two achievement motivation variables suggest the need for further exploration of this dimension as a potentially important aspect of human personality.
