The present study was carried out to investigate the cognitive efficiency effect of categorization in the person perception. Categorization effect (facilitation of rating speed) occurred in the mildly ambiguous information condition, but not in the obvious condition and two extremely ambiguous (neutral and conflicting) conditions. These results indicate that the ambiguity of information was not always a determinant factor to produce the categorization effect. Somewhat reasonable relation between a categorical label and the original information was necessary to produce the effect, as well as some ambiguity of information. The results also indicate that subjects dared not ignore contradictory elements to integrate SP in the conflicting information condition.
