The present study investigated the influence of interpersonal affect upon the organization of information in person memory. Sixteen graduates and undergraduates were asked to study a list of 20 behavioral descriptions ascribed to an imaginary person and to form an impression of him. Before presenting the list of behavioral descriptions, the subjects were shown the prior trait information about the person. The valence (positive vs. negative) of interpersonal affect was varied by the prior trait information. Recognition test revealed that friendly behaviors were more likely to be falsely recognized than unfriendly behaviors when subjects had positive affect toward the person. But such differential false recognition for friendly and unfriendly behavior was not observed when subjects had negative affect. The results demonstrated that positive affect is more likely than negative affect to facilitate the organizing processes by which inferences and connections were drawn from the given information.
