MF/UF technologies were put into practical use in 1970s. Then the application of these technologies in the field of water processing began in the 1990s. This paper discusses the past development of MF/UF technologies in both market and technical aspects and takes a look at the future of the technologies. In the field of water processing, the use of MF/UF technologies started to ensure high water quality at first, and the purpose of the use was then extended to securing water itself. From a technical viewpoint, a remarkable change that took place in the past 15 years is the use of PVDF as a membrane material, and PVDF has been a mainstream raw material. The PVDF membrane has increased permeate flux and extended membrane life, which is the improvement of membrane basic performance, thanks to its high mechanical and chemical durability. These technological achievements have also contributed to the widespread use of MF/UF technologies. For further expansion of MF/UF technologies, it is necessary to improve membrane performance further. The basic performance of membrane depends on its chemical and physical structures. Deep understanding of these structures and flexible approach to their improvement give new breakthroughs.
