Plasma membrane (Na, K) -ATPase transports 3 Na<SUP>+</SUP> out of and 2 K<SUP>+</SUP> into the cell, and thus the pump is electrogenic. This review describes experiments on topical aspects of the cation movement mechanism of (Na, K) -ATPase, putting emphasis on electrogenic properties, reconstitution, and cation occlusion or deocclusion from the transport enzyme molecule.
