We investigated the feasibility of plasma treatment as a surface modification method of polyethylene membrane for pervaporation. As a result it was found that the plasma treatment for such a short time as an hour affects greatly liquid permeation rate and separation factor, no distinct difference exist among the treatment effect of nitrogen, helium and oxygen plasma treatment, and for the benzene-aniline mixture plasma treatment increased the liquid permeation rate and decreased separation factor due to the partial destruction of physical structure of membrane surface. However, for the feed of benzene-acetic acid liquid permeation rate increased and separation factor remained unchanged rejecting acetic acid in the feed on the ground that the surface of plasma treated membrane has become rather more acidic than untreated polyethylene.
