A composite membrane made from polyethylenimine (PEI) coated on a microporous polysulfone support and crosslinked with <I>m</I>-tolylene-2, 4-diisocyanate (TDI) was used to investigate the reverse osmosis performance of EtOH-H<SUB>2</SUB>O mixture. Applied pressure ranged 20-80 kg/cm<SUP>2</SUP>. Permeation rate in this range were proportional to operating pressure, being 20-110×10<SUP>-5</SUP> cc/cm<SUP>2</SUP>-sec. With 2% of PEI and 2% of TDI, solute rejection was reached to 64%, which was superior to DDS-HR-98 membrane but lower than PEC-membrane (Toray Industries, Inc.), while permeation rate of water was 60×10-5 cc/cm2-sec which was superior to that of PEC membrane.<BR>Some parameters relating to the reverse osmosis performance, <I>A</I>, σ, α, β and <I>D</I><SUB>EM</SUB>/<I>K</I>σ were determined experimentally for PSET membrane with a view to assist the design of reverse osmosis system of aqueous ethanol solution.
