Conceptual design studies of large scale tokamaks have made clear the need for superconducting pulse coils for ohmic heating of the plasma. The required pulsing rate is about 10 T/ sec. However, for small size tokamaks as are planned for the Reacting Plasma Project, the field ramp rate must be in excess of 100 T/ sec. Only few investigations have been done on the development of high current cabled superconductors and much more important, on the pulse coil themselves. In this review article, we describe superconducting pulse coils developed or under development in the United States and in Japan. The present R & D is insufficient for the design and construction of near future tokamak machines.
