A coaxial plasma gun has been used to inject a hydrogen plasma axially into a composite linear multipole guide field. The guide field consists of an octopole section 1.2 meters long followed by a quadrupole section of the same length. Plasma is transferred from the octopole section to the quadrupole section with an effeciency of at least 50%. Circulating plasma currents having the general shape of a convection cell have been detected in the octopole. Observations have been made using directional Langmuir probes, magnetic probes, calorimeters, and spectroscopy.
