A new principle of a high-power microwave source using a superconducting cavity as an energy storage is proposed.<BR>Since the quality factor about 1011 and the electric field strength up to 60 MV/m are presently attainable, microwaves with energy density up to 16 KJ/m3 can be stored in a super-conducting cavity. The stored energy can be released, in a short time, by changing mechanically the coupling factor between the cavity and a waveguide circuit. The technical possibilities are discussed in some detail. It is emphasized that, although the economical feasibilities are not assured at this stage of technology, this energy storage can be used to produce high-power microwave pulses which are not available in usual microwave oscillators. We suggest that the energy storage presented here can be applied to the experiments in nuclear fusion research, because of the possibility of the long pulse operation of the order of 10-3 sec.
