Many media have been developed for the isolation and cultivation of strictly anaerobic, non-sporulating Gram-negative rods. In this study, some of them were modified and improved for the selective growth of the genera Bacteroides, Sphaerophorus and Fusobacterium, using a number of freshly isolated and stock strains. The following media were proved to be the most satisfactory for this purpose.1) As a selective cultivation medium for Bacteroides: CNBGT (colistin-neomycin-brilliant greenglucose-taurocholate) medium which was derived from Mitsuokas medium.2) As a selective cultivation medium for Sphaerophorus and Fusobacterium: Modified FM medium (containing pepsin-digested cows blood and neomycin) which was derived from FM medium (Difco; containing sheep blood and streptomycin).
