Lipoma in the lower lip : Report of a case.

The Lipoma is one of the most common and most widely disseminated mesenchymal tumors found in the human body, but is rarely found in the oral regions. In this paper, a 44-year-old woman with lipoma in the right lower lip was reported, and 157 cases of lipoma in the oral regions that have been reported in Japan were discussed. The patient visited the Tohoku University Hospital of Dentistry with the chief complaint of a tumor in the right lower lip. No abnormalities were observed in the patients past or family history. She first noticed a rice grain sized tumor in the lower lip about five years ago, and the tumor gradually increased in size thereafter. Oral examination revealed that the tumor was well circumscribed, thumb tip-sized, elastic soft in consistency and yellowish red in colour. The tumor was clinically diagnosed lipoma and resected under local anesthesia. The specimen was a spherical, encapsulated, soft, yellowish mass measuring 22×17×12mm. Microscopically, the tumor consisted of matured adipose tissue, therefore histopathological diagnosis of the tumor was simple lipoma. 1 year postoperatively there is no sign of recurrence.
