A study was made of the mechanical behavior of the temporomandibular joint under occlusal force using finite element method. A two dimensional numerical model of teeth, mandible, articular disk and temporal bone was divided by 394 triangular elements and 250 nodal points. Loading conditions were expressed as a resultant force of masseter, pterygoid medialis and temporalis under various proportions of loading conditions. To evaluate lack of teeth effects on temporomandibular joint, various supporting conditions were changed.<BR>It was suggested that the posterior band of the articular disk between articular surface of mandibular fossa and condyle functioned as the temporomandibular joint shock absorber.
