In recent years the matter of public nuisance has become a subject of discussion, and exhaust noise from large bore diesel engines tested at our Sakurajima Works in Osaka has also been taken up by the people who live in the area along the other side of the River-Aji. For the purpose of solving this problem, a series of special measurements was carried out since August of 1965 till January of 1966, and based on the results of those measurements, two sets of exhaust gas silencers were newly designed and constructed.
Previous to the construction acoustic measurement was carried out with a testing model, and after the completion of construction characteristics of those silencers were thoroughly measured and investigated and were found to be satisfactory.
With those new silencers, vibrations of fittings of houses or house constructions in the area along the other side of the River-Aji were completely eliminated.
In this paper, the authors present design practice and results of measurements on exhaust gas silencers of combinations of resonator chambers which can be effectively applied for attenuation of diesel engine exhaust noise especially of lower frequencies. Even in the case of such a large type, characteristics of attenuation can be estimated fairly accurately by means of the abovementioned calculation method.
