Due to the short distance of voyage for some car ferries, the 4-cycle medium speed diesel engines are operated with frequent starting & stopping, low load operation in port & bay and relative low load in navigation.<BR>In general, the engine specification is selected by considering the performance in high load range. Therefore, the difference between settled engine specification and actual running condition seemed to cause the heavy wear problem.<BR>This paper shows the various countermeasures to this problem, remaching of tarbocharger with variable timing plunger for MPC system, proper selection of fuel injection nozzle by rounding-off of nozzle hole inlets, suitable adjustment of oil ring pressure for gas tight ring, etc.<BR>The wear results of components for combustion room were investigated during ab, 6 years and compared before & after improvement of engine. The much wear was recognized on the components before improvement, but the wear rates after improvement are keeping below 10μm /1000h and the stable condition of lube oil are also confirmed.
