On the recent development of power up of 2 cycle diesel engine, it is observed to have a tendency to increase tie "<I>Pme</I>", without changing the length of engine, instead of the usual method of enlarging the cylinder diameters. As a result of this, the crankshaft for such engine are subject to higher stress and more severe operation.<BR>Corresponding to this trend, it is investigated to increase the strength of the material for large cast steel crank throw.<BR>At the first, a study has been made of the mechanical properties and weldability of the new material using keel blocks. Then, we have manufactured for trial one of the largest cast steel crank throw, B & W K90GF type, for the purpose of researching into its internal strength, soundness and fatigue strength. This report describes the result of these investigations.
