On Determinating Required Electric Power for Cargo Handling Equipments

The electric power required for the cargo handling equipments is very important for determinating the capacities of the generators for the ships, nevertheless the calculation method for its electric power is not yet decided.<BR>In this paper, the statistical method is adopted to investigate the quantity of the electric power for the cargo handling equipments, because this power varies at random. It is proved that the varied electric power distributes according to the normal distribution as the result of calculation for the deck cranes. The root-mean-square power and the maximum power are shown by means of the deviation and the limit coefficients. The root-mean-square power determines the equivalent capacity for the generator. The maximum power is defined as the value of the power for the setting current of the over current relay protecting the generator. The limit coefficient, which is newly led in this paper, is affected by the time limit of the over current relay.<BR>Therefore, the characteristics of the relays used for the ships' generators are investigated. The limit coefficient and the maximum power are discussed on the examples of the actual deck cranes.
