The Tooth root stresses in the bull wheels of two identical marine speed-reduction units which were installed on 370, 000 ton and 420, 000 ton tankers were measured by strain gauges at shop trials, mooring trials and sea trials. A sufficiently large amount of data was obtained to determine the frequency distribution with respect to the mean values of stress variations in order to find the longitudinal distributions of mean stress.
The conclusions may be summarized as follows:
(1) The longitudinal tooth root stress distributions were not significantly influenced by dry-docking, or change of draught.
(2) Contrary to theoretical predictions, the longitudinal tooth root stress distributions were not significantly influenced by change of torque.
(3) In measurements for the 1st ship, longitudinal tooth root stress distributions were highly sensitive to non-parallelity of the bull wheel shaft.
(4) At the MCR of the 2nd ship, longitudinal tooth root stress distributions were similar to the longitudinal load distributions obtained by theoretical methods. These theoretical results were also substantiated by the contact marks revealed by using"Dykem".
(5) The ratio of the mean stress values generated by the meshing of the pinion on the high pressure turbine side to that of the pinion on the low pressure turbine side agreed well with the power ratio of the turbines themselves.
(6) The mean tooth root stresses obtained at MCR were 7% to 11% larger than those obtained by the modified ISO formula.
(7) The minimum and maximum amplitudes of the fluctuating peak stress magnitudes at MCR for the eight gauges were 8.0% and 26% of the corresponding mean stresses. respectively.
