Abnormal wear of cylinder liner and piston ring, and abnormal corrosion of liner in the highly supercharged marine diesel engines may be ascribed mainly to the condensed water in the charging air.<BR>In order to avoid the water condensation in the charging air, the temperature of charging air should be raised up over the dew point. As the dew point of the charging air increases according to the increase of the charging pressure, the temperature of the charging air should be kept at higher level in highly supercharged engines.<BR>However, it is not always possible to keep the charging air temperature over the dew point due to the limitation by the cooling sea water temperature. Moreover, the higher charging air temperature has a dis-advantage that it gives higher cycle gas temperature and thereby higher thermal load on combustion chamber.<BR>Based on the above reasons, we decided to develop the water-separator in order to take off the condensed water before its entering into the cylinder, keeping the charging air temperature as low as possible.<BR>In order to find out the optimum type of separator, the preliminary test was carried out, and as a result, impingement type was picked up. At the next step, influence of the various geometric parameters of the separator on the separation efficiency was investigated by the test unit with large capacity.<BR>Through the investigations of the test results, the design criteria were obtained. Based on these design criteria, such a water separator was fitted in the engines in service. Through the measurement on board each ship, it was confirmed that the separator was working with sufficiently high efficiency and with low pressure drop.
