The mineral phase of dental hard tissues always contains some trace elements. It is well known that the quantitative analysis of these elements in teeth is useful for estimating the doses of past ingestion.
This work was done to estimate the cadmium concentration in teeth obtaind from the inhabitants of a cadmium contaminated region in Toyama prefecture, compared with those from an uncontaminated control region.
The averages of cadmium concentration in the uncontaminated control group were 0.135 ppm in enamel and 0.099 ppm in dentine. On the other hand those of the contaminated group were 0.224 ppm in enamel and 0.404 ppm in dentine.
The concentration of cadmium in teeth paralleld the levels of geological contamination of the region and the occurance rate of'Ouch-Ouch'disease, which is caused by chronic cadmium toxication.
