Chemical stress relaxation and evolution of hydrogen chloride on the thermal degradation of epichlorohydrin rubbers were measured, and the mechanism of thermal degradation was postulated.The degradation of epichlorohydrin rubbers was found to proceed in two steps. It is considered that it involves autooxidation as the first step and degradation by hydrogen chloride resulting from oxidation as the second step. The second step may be regarded as a degradation accompanied with softening.As for the heat resistance CHC is much inferior to CHR. This may be attributed to the degradation of polyethyleneoxide block through the back-biting reaction by hydrogen chloride.It was found that polyhydroxylaromatic carboxylic acids such as gallic acid have a stabilization effect.
