Iodine adsorption of various carbon blacks was investigated using an iodine-potassium iodide aqueous solution. The time required for adsorption equilibrium was about 15 minutes. According to the adsorption isotherm, it was found that a monomolecular layer is first formed and then the layer gradually changed to be multimolecular. This isotherm was not based on the Langmuir equation but on the BET equation. The iodine ion concentration varied during the operation. The decrease and increase of iodine ion concentration were due to the adsorption of ion and the reduction of molecular iodine, respectively, as well as due to a variety of carbon blacks. The hysteresis between adsorption and desorption was hardly noticed, indicating that the iodine adsorption was physical.
