As is generally known on the case of a rubber strip, the fatigue phenomena of rubber are considered, if the influence of generation of heat is not taken into account, as a crack growth process generating from the a priori exsisting micro-flaws of the specimen.In this paper, a tensile fatigue test is performed on a cylindrical rubber specimen of pure gum compound with or without an initial cut. The relation between the crack growth process and the fatigue life is also investigated.As the result, it is found that the rate of crack growth is proportional to the crack area, A, and is expressed by dA/dn=KA, where n is a number of cycles and K is the growth coefficient. The coefficient K is affected by the strain amplitude and the position at which the crack grows but not affected by the frequency.The calculated fatigue life obtained by estimating the magnitude of the micro-flaw agrees fairly well with the experimental one. Finally, it is suggested that, from a viewpoint of tearing energy, a more unified conclusion than the one stated above may be drawn on the rate of crack growth.
