Lipase activity and lipase antigenicity were examined in 34 strains of yeasts. The culture supernatants from nine strains of Geotrichum candidum, three other strains of Geotrichum sp. and two strains of Endomyces geotrichum showed significant lipase activity, but seven strains of G. candidum and other examined yeasts showed very low or no activity. The culture medium used contained corn steep liquor together with soybean oil. A commercially available crystalline lipase from a G. candidum strain was used as an immunogen to produce the antiserum against Geotrichum lipase. The antiserum (ALS-1) had two precipitation lines against the homologous antigen. For a purer antiserum, a rabbit was immunized with a precipitation line in agar plates which was considered to originate from the lipase and not from a contaminant. However, the serum (ALS-2) was not specific to the lipase and contained an antibody against a minor contaminant in the preparation or some compounds in the culture supernatants in some examined strains. Both sera produced a precipitation line which was linked to the line produced by the lipase when reacted with the supernatant. The lipase preparations produced by the active strains were supposed to have a common antigenic structure. However, neutralization tests with ALS-2 revealed that the neutralization curves of some yeasts were different. On the basis of titers of 50% inhibition and the inclinations of the curves, yeasts were classified into four groups. This grouping agreed with the classification based on isozyme patterns or the antigenicity of their extracts against the sera prepared by immunizing with cell extracts of G. candidum.
