For the purpose of the determination of saccharin in foods by gas-liquid chromatography, a rapid and quantitative technique of the methylation of saccharin was studied using gaseous diazomethane with simple and convenient apparatus. The apparatus consists of fourp arts to generate diazomethane and methylate saccharin successively. Gaseous diazomethane generated by adding ethereal solution of N-methyl-N-nitroso-p-toluenesulfonamide to ethanolic solution of potassium hydroxide was carried into ethereal solution of saccharin by a stream of air saturated with ether. The reaction of saccharin and diazomethane through this procedure was rapid, and saccharin was quantitatively converted to volatile N-methyl and O-methyl derivatives. The ratio of O-me-thyl saccharin to N-methyl one in the product was 17% consistently.
