In order to reduce the cost of the artificial feed for the older larvae of the silkworm, Bombyx mori, we formulated a diet which contained several feed materials and the feeds for the livestock. (1) It was possible to replace partly or mostly dietary corn starch and soybean meal by the feed materials for the livestock, such as corn meal, kaoliang meal, corn rind and soybean rind, without any noticeable adverse effect. (2) The yields of cocoon shell were increased when 30_??_45% defatted soybean meal was combined with 64_??_49% corn or kaoliang meal. The variation in the ratio of corn meal to kaoliang meal in the diet did not affect the cocoon yield. (3) Corn or soybean rind was also found to be used as sub-material for silkworm feed, when added at a level less than 25% of the total dry diet. (4) When the 5 th instar larvae of the silkworm were reared on the livestock feeds on the market, they were able to grow and spin cocoons. Considering these results, the composition of the silkworm feed will become to be more or less similar to that of the feed of livestock.
