L-Glutamate fermentation with acetic acid and with non carbohydrate carbon sources was studied using Brevibacterium thiogenitalis D-248, an oleic acid auxotroph. Acetic acid was the most excellent substrate for the extracellular accumulation of L-glutamate. It was also produced from ethanol, methylacetate or ethylacetate though the productivity was not so appreciable. Furthermore L-glutamate producing activities of oleic acid auxotrophs were compared with those of the parent strains using three species of L-glutamate bacteria. The productivities of the oleic acid auxotrophs were always considerably superior to those of the parent strains so far examined. In addition effectiveness of medium components including acetic acid and various additives were investigated.
