It was found that the polarographic current of fructose changed from kinetically controlled to diffusion-controlled one as the concentration of hydroxyl ion was increased. Assuming that this phenomenon was caused by the oxocyclo-desmotropy of fructose, this polarographic behavior was analyzed. An equation was derived which expressed the wave height of fructose as a function of mercury pressure. The values of kf/K (kf: the forward rate constant, K: the equilibrium constant) at various pH values or various temperatures were calculated from the other equation. A linear relationship was found between the concentration of hydroxyl ion and kf/K. From this linear relationship it was estimated that hydroxyl ion played the part of catalyst on the oxocyclo-desmotropy of fructose. The activation energy 7.8 Cal/M was calculated from Arrhenius equation.
