The carbohydrates of three portions, i.e. upper leaves, middle leaves and lower leaves, of, Allium fistulosum L., Welsh-onion, were divided into fourteen fractions (See Fig. 1). Free sugars and the component sugars of each fraction have been investigated mainly by the method of paper chromatography. The following results were obtained (See Table 2). In each portion, glucose, fructose, sucrose and maltose and more than five kinds of unknown oligosaccharides (fructose-oligosaccharides) which consisted of fructose only, were detected as free sugars. Also, a small amounts of fructan were detected from the lower leaves. Rhamnose, galactose, glucose, arabinose and xylose were detected from the upper leaves as the components of glycosides. Galactose, galacturonic acid, arabinose and very weak spots of xylose, rhamnose, glucose, mannose and fructose were detected from each portion as the component of hot 50% ethanolsoluble polysaccharides. Galactose, galacturonic acid, arabinose, rhamnose and mannose as the component of cold water-soluble poly saccharides, and more galactose, galacturonic acid, arabinose, rhamnose, glu-cose, mannose and fructose as the component of hot water-soluble-polysaccharides were detected from all three portions. Almost starch no existed in each portion. Rhamnose, galactose, xylose, fructose, glucose, mannnose and an unknown spot (RF 0.43, desoxy-ribose ?) were detected as the components of hemicellulose. Besides the above carbohydrate small quantities of α-cellulose and lignin were also detected.
