In the experiments reported here, the effects of night temperature and amount of the natural light upon the shoot growth and flowering of dahlia were examined. In the first experiment plants propagated from cuttings were grown at minimum night temperatures of 5, 10 and 15°C after decapitation. In the second experiment the natural light was reduced in intensity and duration to about 60 per cent comparing with those of the normal daylight.1. High night temperatures accelerated the growth of shoot. Under low night temperatures plants grew slowly, but produced cut-flowers of high quality.2. When the plants were exposed to 13-hour days, the minimum night temperature of 10°C was most favourable for flowering of dahlia. Under high night temperature the flowering time was spread over a long period. The plants grown under low night temperature flowered more simultaneously than those grown at the high night temperature of 15°C, but their flowering times were delayed.3. Changing the night temperature did not alter the optimum photoperiod for flowering, but varied the lower critical day-length. When plants were grown at the minimum night temperature of 10°C, they required longer photoperiod for normal flowering than those grown at higher or lower night temperature. The numbers of both ray and disk florets increased with decreasing the night temperature.4. By decreasing the intensity or the duration of the natural light given to the plants, the lower critical day-length for flowering was prolonged. Flowering of the shoots exposed to the optimum day-length of 13 hours was retarded in the reduced light, but the flowering per cent was not affected.
