It is well known that blood group related antigens are frequently altered in associa-tion with neoplastic transformation of cells and their expressions were reported in some cancers. LewisY (Ley) antigen is one of blood group related antigen and difucocylated type 2 chain, and its expression was thought to correlate with cell apoptosis. We immunohistochemically investigated the expression of Ley antigen in normal skin and several skin tumors such as squamous cell carcinoma, Bowen's disease and basal cell epithelioma. In normal skin, Ley antigen was expressed on intradermal and intraepidermal eccrine duct and secretory portion of eccrine gland. In squamous cell carcinoma, keratinized cells in cancer pearl and several tumor cells showing apoptotic morphology were positively stained. In Bowen's disease, positive staining was found on some keratinocytes but not on dyskeratotic cells. In basal cell epithelioma, tumor cells were not stained. It was suggested that Ley antigen expression was correlated with not only apoptosis but with neoplastic transformation of keratinocytes.
