Niihama facing the Inland Sea on the north side of Shikoku and having the population of 50, 000, was a poor fishing- and agricultural-village before Meiji-era. The rapid increase of population is due to the development of the Besshi Copper Mine at the back, the smeltering industries including the chemical- and machinery-industries, have been attracted by it successively.
