The authors investigated the turf exfoliation in the northern parts of the Kitakami Mountains. The denuded landforms are observed in grazed Zoysia Japonica grasslands on the gentle westward or southwestward slopes near the ridges.Meteorological data shows that periodical change of the soil temperature by the freeze-thaw action may occur in early winter and in early spring. Wind velocity is especially high in the period from mid-winter to April or May. These facts indicate that the process of erosion may be accelerated remarkably in early spring.Vegetational evidence suggests that decrease of turf coverage by overgrazing of cattle may have a marked effect on the formation of ice-needles. Natural regeneration of vegetation on the denuded landforms covered with stone debris was found to begin with the invasion of woody plants such as willow (Salix reinii) and birch (Betula ermani).
