The World Bank has provided financial assistance since 1974 for improvement of waste management services in developing countries. Total figures relating to this program at the end of 1988 included 40 countries, 71 projects and investments of some 500 million US dollars. Many World Bank waste management projects have been as part of urban development projects, mainly providing waste collection equipment. These projects, however, have been limited to infrastructural facilities. In future, waste management planners should have enough time to collect basic materials on the status of objective countries and to prepare project proposals. It is important to strengthen the waste-related institutions and financial arrangement in addition to technology transfer. The World Bank is now promoting various research programs such as how to develop waste management fee strategies.
