The effects of pretreatments with omeprazole and cimetidine on gastric mucosal pH, gasrtic transumcosal potential difference (PD) and ulcer index in rats which were subjected to water-immersion stress after experimental induction of obstructive jaundice or acute renal failure were examined. The gastric mucosal pH was significantly higher in omeprazole-treated rats than in cimetidine-treated rats both in obstructive jaundice and acute renal failure. PD was remarkably elevated by omeprazole treatment but not significantly affected by cimetidine treatment in obstrucitve jaundice. In rats with acute renal failure, either drug showed no significant effect on PD. Ulcer index was markedly decreased by treatment with both drugs in rats with obstrucitve jaundice. However, in acute renal failure, only omeprazole strongly inhibited ulcer formation and the effect of cimetidine was much less.
