Experimental studies on intraluminal administration of oxygenated perflurochemical (PFC) emulsion to the ischemic gastrointestinal tract.

Experimental studies were performed by intraluminal administration of oxygenated perfluorochemical (PFC) emulsion, in order to prevent ischemic changes of the gastrointestinal tract and to find out possibilities of the clinical application of the PFC. (1) When superior mesenteric arteries of the mongoreal dogs were occluded for 120min, ischemic changes of the jejunal mucosa treated by oxygenated PFC were minimal. (2) Stable isotope 18O was detected in the portal veins of rats after administration of 18O rich PFC emulsion orally or rectally. (3) When the occlusion of superior mesenteric arteries for 120min was released, declamping shock of rats treated with oxygenated PFC was mitigated. (4) When rats were loaded with water immersion stress, occurrence of stress ulcer was inhibited in the oxygenated PFC treated group.These results suggest that intraluminal administration of oxygenated PFC emulsion has possibilities of clinical application.
