Among anaerobes, Bacteroides fragilis, Clostridium perfringens, Peptococcus magnus and Peptostreptococcus anaerobius were examined for β-glucuronidase (β-G) activity in GAM medium and the bile of cholelithiasis. All of the anaerobes showed β-G activity.B. fragilis showed a particularly high activity. A mixed culture of B. fragilis and Escherichia coli was compared with a single culture of B. fragilis or E. coli as to β-G activity. In mixed culture, slightly higher activity was noted. The change in bile acid composition of the bile on incubation with these four anaerobes was investigated. In almost all instances, decreases in total bile acid, cholic acid (C) and chenodeoxycholic acid (CDC) and a tendency for C/CDC ratio to increase were found. The above results suggest that these anaerobes participate in the formation of calcium bilirubinate stones in cholelithiasis.
