For the evaluation of the healing of ulcerative colitis, biopsy specimens were studied by scanning electron microscopy to calculate the number of colonic glands/mm2. In 60 normal subjects, the number of colonic glands/mm2 in the rectum was 107.0±27.3, without age and sex difference. In 29 lesions of 18 patients with ulcerative colitis, the number of colonic glands/mm2 was 23.4±10.1 in patients with active ulcer (+), 45.8±24.7 in those without active ulcer, and 91.9±23.5 in patients under remission.A significant difference was found between the patients in active stage and patients under remission (p<0.005), but no significant difference was found between patients under remission, and healthy subjects. Patients under remission were thus found to show values similar to those in healthy subjects, suggesting a state of healing.
