To investigate the mechanism of acute stress ulcer, mucosal blood flow, oxygen tension and energy metabolism has been studied in the rat stomach during stress loading of restraint and water immersion.The gastric corporal mucosal blood flow remarkably decreased soon after water immersion, yet antral one did not show a corresponding decrease. Also, gastric mucosal oxygen tension in the corpus moderately decreased by stress, yet antral one did not changed. The energy metabolism in corporal mucosa tended to anerobic glycolysis with hypoxia caused by the decline of blood flow, and the levels of high energy phosphates consequently decreased from beginning to 2 hours after stress.In consideration of the decrease of energy production and the rise of its demand by the accelaration of acid output during stress loading, the existence of gastric mucosal energy deficit may be clear. From the dada presented herein, we considered that the flagility of defence factors such as the decrease of mucosal blood flow, hypoxia and energy deficit was strongly concerned in the etiology of stress ulceration which thus occues.
