CCK-LA of the duodenal mucosa was measured by a bioassay method described by Ljungberg to elucidate the change and significance in 10 patients with duodenal ulcer as well as in 13 healthy subjects without any evidence of gastrointestinal diseases. The stages of duodenal ulcer were determined endoscopically according to the classification by the Japanese gastroenterological endoscopic society stated in 1962. The CCK-LA of the duodenal mucosa in patients with duodenal ulcer in the active stage-1, which was considered as an early stage of active open duodenal ulcer, did not differ statistically from that in normal subjects. While, the CCK-LA of the duodenal mucosa in patients with duodenal ulcer in active stage-2 started to show significant increase (p<0.025), and the CCK-LA of the duodenal mucosa in patients with duodenal ulcer in healing stage-1 and-2 were significantly higher than that in normal subjects (p<0.005). However, the CCK-LA of the duodenal mucosa in patients with duodenal ulcer in scarring stages returned to the normal range.Judging from the above results and reviewing relating several literatures, we discussed the role of CCK in the etiology, pathogenesis and in healing processes of duodenal ulcer.
