A COMPARATIVE STUDY BETWEEN CONTACT MICRORADIO-GRAPHY OF THE BARIUM-COATED SPECIMENS AND HISTOPATHOLOGY OF THE TYPE IIc GASTRIC CARCINOMA

In order to examine the possibility of microscopic detail delineation by direct or indirect magnification technique of the gastrointestinal barium study, contact microradio-graphy (x3-x20) of the mucosal surface was carried out with 72 cases of resected human specimens of the digestive tract, and compared with both histopathology and optical dissecting microscopy. Results are the followings: Foveolar patterns of the mucosal surface of the type IIc gastric carcinoma may be classified into six types, however, each may not correspond well with histopathology, such as the grade of differentiation, mode of invasion, volume of stroma and extent of infiltration of gastric carcinoma. The more the magnification ratio may be, the more informations from regions near the surface may be obtained, but the lesser information from deeper regions as sm-pm layer may be transmitted. Then, microscopic detail delineation of the mucosal surface may be of important value for the diagnosis of m-layer as foveolar epithelium, mucosal island, erosion and ulcer etc., however, the reliable diagnosis for deeply located lesions as sm-or pm-layer (e.g. either the estimation of depth invasion or the discovery of small scirrhous carcinoma) may be difficult unless the lesions have some influence on the fine structure near the surface.
