Vx2 carcinoma was transplanted into the pancreatic duct of rabbit, and pancreatic cancerwas produced. When tumor cells were transplanted in the head of the pancreas, assumingcancer of the head of the pancreas of man, tumor grew and infiltrated continuously and expansivelytoward the body or tail of the pancreas, and moreover, many daughter tumorswere found on the pancreas distal to the chief tumor. When tumor cells were transplantedin the body or tail of the pancreas, assuming cancer of the body and tail of the pancreas ofman, tumor grew and infiltrated continuously and expansively toward the head of pancreas, but no daughter tumor was found on the head of the pancreas. This difference seems tobe attributable to the exsistense of the blockage of the pancreatic duct and the directionof the lymphatic flow.To perform radical operation for malignant tumor of the pancreas, at least the pancreasdistal to the chief tumor should be resected, so, for periampullary carcinoma or cancer of thehead of the pancreas, it is rational to perform total pancreatectomy as radical operation.
