Japanese official statistics show that the physique of children in Japan has improved remarkably since the end of the second World War. It has been pointed out that this is due to changes in diet, especially the increase in animal protein. However, it can not be ignored that the environmental factors such as living conditions in the home have also a great influence on the improvement of physique from the standpoint of human ecology. This investigation reports the influence of the Western life style such as the use of chairs and western type beds on the physique.Using the data obtained by questionnaires distributed to 793 subjects who were students in womens junior colleges in Hiroshima and Osaka cities, 108 subjects having used a western style bed for at least twelve years were designated as the bed group, whereas 108 subjects having used only Japanese bed mat were designated as the futon group.Among the members of each group, then, 12 subjects who used chairs while eating meals, studying or spending time in the living room for at least eight years were designated as the chair using group, whereas 12 subjects with no experience using chairs were designated as the floor sitting group.Photographs of front and side view of the subjects in the above groups were taken with a camera called “silhouetter” Using these photographs, the lengths and angles of the body were measured and analysed. The results were as follows:1) Statistically significant differences were not found between the bed group and the futon group regarding such values as average height, breadth, depth, girth, depth/breadth index, etc.2) E-angle and H-angle of the futon group were larger than the ones of the bed group and differed significantly.3) M-angle, upper body reclined angle and B-angle of the bed group were larger than the ones of the futon group and differed significantly.4) The height of pillows had no relation with the neck-reclined angle.5) There was no significant difference between the chair using group and the floor sitting group concerning height, girth, depth/breadth index and various angles of the side body view.6) Curvatures of the back of the upper part of the body of the bed group and the chair sitting group were larger than the ones of the futon group and the floor sitting group, respectively.
