In this paper, the author reports his experimental study on the human response to low-level vibrations as the nuisance caused by the vehicular traffic. In general, the standard of the International Organization for Standardization has been well applied for the evaluation on the human response to vibration. The level of the vibration nuisance is not as high as the vibration which discussed the health of industrial workers in International Standard ISO-2631, but its level is quite low. The permissible level of vibrations is set up by lesions on the physiological function, or effects on the task performance, or various levels of perception. It is appropriate to discuss levels of perception in the case of vibration nuisance. However, the evaluation for the level of perception has been influenced by the following factors: body posture, sex distinction, crest of vibration, accompanying noise, direction of vibration and so on.The author has studied the relationship among several factors and the human response to low-level vibrations with questionnaires and a few analyses. The results obtained are as follows:1. The perception threshold of nonstationary vibration is nearly identical to the threshold of stationary vibration, but its deviation is about twice as large as the deviation of stationary vibration.2. A woman may respond to a lower level than a man, but there is no difference of the response to low-level vibration between standing and sitting postures.3. The perception threshold is affected by the crest of vibration.4. The accompanying noise distracts the perception to the low-level vibration, but in the case of high-level vibration the effect of masking is relatively reduced.
