Since the normal phonatory range of phonatory factors such as pitch, intensity and flow rate is very wide, coresponding with the various phonatory modes in normal phonaton, it should be understood that an abnormal phonatory function means a phonatory range narrower than normal, or the shift of the phonatory mode to a narrowed phonatory range.<BR>Therefore, the phonatory function test should be understandable in reference to the phonatory mode.<BR>In this respect, the diminuendo phonatory mode (which is the mode to start phonation at high intensity and to decrease intensity gradually while the pitch is kept constant) well fits the aim of the phonatory function test for the following two reasons.<BR>In reference to diminuendo phonation, the logarithm value of the flow rate and the intensity value show an almost linear relationship which can be demonstrated as a regression line "dB=C0+C1 log F" (dB: intensity; F: flow rate; C0, C1: constant), using the least square method as processed on a microcomputer.<BR>The regression line display of the diminuendo phonation comforms to the quantitative expression of an individual phonatory mode.<BR>Furthermore, as a perturbation or cease of voice at low intensity level during the diminuendo phonation easily occurs in pathological phonation, the diminuendo phonatory mode is suitable for revelation of pathological phonation.
