This paper presents the result of analysis of articulatory functions in three glossectomized patients referred to the authors' clinic. A discussion is then made with reference to the other papers submitted to this special issue on determinant factors for articulatory ability in the postglossectomy condition. Among those factors, the amount of remaining portion of the tongue after glossectomy, presence or absence of reconstruction of the tongue and/or the floor of the mouth, and that of asymmetry in the oral cavity secondary to the deformity of the mandible are considered to be most important as structural constraints. Early initiation of postoperative articulatory training seems indispensable for the development of compensatory articulation. Significance of the development of simple and reliable methods for the assessment of articulatory ability is emphasized. It is also pointed out that the multidisciplinary approach to rehabilitation planning including proper counselling is as highly important as systematic trainings for better postoperative articulatory function in the glossectomized.
