We investigated the underlying impairment of defective articulation and reading/writing disabilities in a case of delayed speech, using documents covering six years remedial treatment.
The subject was a 15-year-old boy. His receptive and expressive speech development was delayed, despite adequate hearing and normal nonverbal intelligence (WISC PIQ102 at CA9: 6) . He exhibited severe difficulty in articulation. Reading and writing development was markedly delayed.
1. These symptoms were consistent with (mixed) phonologic-syntactic deficit syndrome as described by Rapin et al.
2. The characteristic features of the subject's defective articulation were groping for sounds and self-correction searching for correct articulation. Delayed syntactic develop-ment was also observed.
3. The patient's symptoms suggested a disorder of phonological awareness, which was further interpreted to have caused his reading and writing disabilities.
